QUILTEDSKYLINES
quilted 'canvases' made from cotton fabrics, cotton batting, cotton & polyester threads stretched onto canvas stretcher bars
This series began in February 2022, prompted by a challenge to “unstick myself” after two years of creative drought during the Covid-19 pandemic. Each scene is based on an actual view of downtown Houston, photographed, sketched, and machine pieced and quilted.
All quilts are made with 100% cotton fabrics and batting, cotton & polyester threads and are sewn on a home sewing machine. Stars are glass rhinestones and beads sewn on by hand.
Quilts are stretched and stapled to canvas stretcher bars, but they are true quilt “sandwiches” and include a top, batting, and backing.
While the backs aren’t meant to be displayed and are intentionally left “rough”, they are formed from scraps, mistakes, coordinations, and deviations from their tops. Owners are meant to be aware of their existence and the backs are kept open when framed in honor of quilting tradition.
All skylines can be customized to specific views of Houston and can include personally significant fabrics. Night scenes can include preferred constellations and sky scenes can include unique elements such as fireworks, rain, rainbows, and birds.
